How to Get Your Baby to Sleep Safely

safe baby sleepBabies sleep a lot as infants. It’s essential that parents understand the dangers and how they can prevent their children from harm while sleeping. As a nurse and baby sleep expert, I’ve been helping families get the rest they need for years. Here are some tips on baby sleep safety.

1. Put Baby on Their Back

Make sure that you always place baby on his/her back when you are putting your little one down for the night or for a daytime nap. This is the best sleep position for babies because babies who are placed to sleep on their stomachs are at a higher risk for SIDS. The reason for this is uncertain but there have been findings that suggest that infants who sleep on their stomachs get less oxygen or re-breathe their own carbon monoxide, or “bad air”. It is important to keep putting baby down on his back throughout the first year of life.

2. Monitor Your Baby

Having a baby monitor in the room with your baby allows parents to keep an eye or ear on their baby from another room. Monitors give you the ability to listen to your baby and check on them without disturbing their sleep. They help you to identify whether or not baby needs your attention and can provide parents with reassurance that baby is sleeping safe and sound.

3. Keep Crib Empty

It’s important to keep cribs empty of all items such as pillows, blankets, bumper pads and stuffed animals. All of these items pose suffocation hazards to babies. Any loose fabric or soft cushions can unravel and block baby’s nose and mouth. Fighting for air or becoming overheated from too many blankets may be linked to SIDS.

4. Safe Swaddling

Swaddling can be very beneficial for baby as it mimics touch and recreates the confinement felt in the womb. It also helps maintain the “back is best” sleep position and promotes good sleeping patterns. However, traditional swaddling blankets pose the risk of wrapping babies too tightly and reducing necessary movement in the hips causing hip dysplasia. Thick blankets or too many layers can cause overheating, and strong babies can break out of traditional swaddling blankets which can unravel and cover baby’s face.

5. Safe Co-sleeping

They tend to be happier, less anxious, and have higher self-esteem. Some parents believe that leaving baby alone to cry itself to sleep results in stress, which can make baby more prone to illness. Parents who believe in co-sleeping find that baby falls asleep faster and sleeps better overall.

On the other side of the debate, parents argue that co-sleeping is risky for babies as there is an increased chance of overheating and a risk of suffocation if a parent accidentally rolls onto the baby. They believe that an infant sleeps better on his own as constant bed movement can disturb a baby who is co-sleeping. They also argue that co-sleeping does not leave parents with sufficient time to themselves to wind down for the night and does not allow for intimate alone time for parents.

For parents who do decide to take the co-sleeping route, make sure your mattress is firm with tightly fitted sheets and keep your pillow away from the baby. Keep the bed away from side tables and make sure there is no gaps baby can fall into. The best position for baby is on the side of mom instead of in the center of the bed. Consider buying a larger size bed so everyone has more space and can get a better night’s sleep.

8 Tips for Kids to Learn Healthy Eating Habits

teach kids to eat healthyIt’s so tough to teach kids to eat well these days. There are unnatural and unhealthy ingredients in our most inexpensive, most accessible foods. Kids can eat all the bad stuff they like as soon as they’re out of our supervision. It’s tough to monitor their diets. Even still, it’s important that we work to leave them healthy habits once they’re out from under our thumbs. Here’s how you can tech your kids to eat well.

1. Dinner time should be family time.

In our modern, busy lives it’s not uncommon for the family to eat separately. A couple people eat together, another eats in the car on the way to practice, one eats leftovers when she gets home, etc. When we grab something quick or eat in a rush, those foods tend to be unhealthy. Have everyone sit down to dinner together so you can actively monitor everyone’s food intake.

2. Involve your kids in the food shopping.

This isn’t always practical, but whenever possible, include your kids in the food shopping. As you shop, examine the packing labels and discuss the ingredients. Point out how not all foods are equal, and while some may quell hunger, they offer little or no nutritional value. The idea is to make understanding what they’re eating a part of the process.

3. Track down tasty foods.

Foods and snacks don’t need to be laden with sugar to be tasty. In fact, after a period of abstaining from sugar, you would notice that sugary foods are nearly unbearable. There’s a lot of tasty and healthy options out there, you just have to find them. The unhealthy stuff is usually front and center because it’s cheap and easy for stores to stock.

4. Limit sugar and salt.

These two ingredients are a big part of American food and while they’re fine in moderation, they a play a big role in the processed food we put on our store shelves. We don’t just find salt and sugar in cookies and candy, either. Large amounts are added into our staples, like bread, canned soups and vegetables and condiments.

5. Limit portion sizes.

Avoid filling your child’s plate and forcing them to finish every bite. This creates an unhealthy behavior of eating just because food is available. If your child is honestly full, don’t insist they keep eating. We tend to make larger portions for ourselves than we need, but we finish it before our brain registers that our stomachs are full. Eat a bit less and you’ll be surprised that you aren’t hungry.

6. Keep a positive attitude.

Kids (or anyone, for that matter) don’t like to hear what they can’t do. They like to hear what they’re allowed to do. When they ask what’s for dinner, tell them the menu with a positive attitude. Talk about how much you love green beans, peas, carrots and broccoli. Make it seem like a treat that they get to eat such great food. Praise them for eating well without being forced.

7. Serve as a good role model.

Like all parts of parenthood, your kids are going to behave like you no matter what you say. You can’t tell them to eat healthy if you don’t do it yourself. Piling salad on their plates will feel like punishment if you’re skipping that course. Eat the same healthy foods your kids eat and do it with a smile.

8. Set reasonable goals.

Creating hard, unbending rules is the best way to see them broken. If you banish sugary treats from your house entirely, you’ll make your kids crave them and binge when they get the opportunity. Most foods are safe in moderation, so don’t skip birthday cake because it isn’t healthy; let everyone live a little.

9 Easy Recipes for a Grab-and-Go Breakfast

grab and go breakfastIn many houses, mornings are go-go-go time. Everyone has to get ready and get to work and school in just a few hours. As much as we would love to make an elaborate breakfast for our kids every day, it’s usually not in the cards. Here are some easy breakfast ideas to grab-and-go.

1. Waffle Sticks

Rather than pancakes, I prefer to make waffles for breakfast, especially when I’m in a rush. Since waffles are so sturdy, I’ll slice one into three or four strips and let my kids eat them with their hands. If we have a minute to sit down, I’ll let them dunk the waffle sticks into syrup, but if we’re on the move, I’ll sprinkle a bit of powdered sugar for flavor.

2. Breakfast Wrap

My kids love bacon and eggs, but when we’re in a rush there’s no time to sit down. I’ll stuff some scrambled eggs, a few broken slices of bacon, and a piece of cheese in a flour tortilla. This gives them a proper breakfast, but they can eat it in the car.

3. Smoothies

Smoothies are great because you can pack in just about any healthy food you like and hide the flavor with fruit. Kale and spinach are great for you, but good luck getting your kids to willingly eat those. If you blend them in a smoothie with a bit of Greek yogurt, berries and orange juice, the taste is completely hidden and you’ve got a vitamin-packed breakfast. Store in a few to-go cups and you’re off.

4. Bagel with Cream Cheese and…

I like to add little twists to traditional foods so they’re a tad more memorable. A bagel with cream cheese is pretty normal, but when you add a slice of tomato and cucumber, you get something special with a bit more taste. Also, more nutrients is always good.

5. Stuffed Muffins

Muffins are easy to hold and eat while you’re walking or driving. My favorite thing about them is that you can make a few trays worth and keep them in the fridge for the week. If your family likes them hot, 30 seconds in the microwave will do. Mix ingredients like spinach, mushrooms, cheese, onions, and zucchini.

6. Hard-Baked Eggs

Yes, you read that correctly. Instead of boiling eggs (I never get the timing right), you can easily bake eggs in their shells for thirty minutes at 325-350 degrees. Put them in muffin trays so they don’t wiggle around or fall on one another. Once finished, rinse them in cold water to cool them down. (The brown spots on the shell are normal and harmless).

7. Egg Muffins

This is basically an egg sandwich without the bread. Scramble some eggs and pour into a greased muffin pan. Add chopped ham, onions, cheese and any other vegetable you like. Bake until the eggs are cooked well and they should pop out like muffins. Voila! Egg sandwich without any mess.

8. Homemade Cereal Bars

By microwaving your favorite cereal with marsh mellows, you’ll create a sticky, pliable concoction. Let the marsh mellows harden a bit, then mold the cereal into a rectangular bar for easy eating. Make seven on Sunday for the week and keep them in the fridge.

9. Hand-held Hash Browns

Crispy hash browns are a favorite of kids, but usually you have to eat them with a fork and plate, unless you buy the frozen patties, which I’m not a fan of. Spray your waffle maker with cooking spray and lay your shredded potatoes in a waffle-like pattern. After cooking, they’ll stick together like a patty for easy hand-holding.

What to Do When Baby is Overstimulated

overstimulated babyIn the beginning, your baby’s brain grows very fast. It requires a lot of learning opportunities, but every so often you’ll find your baby will cry and you can’t figure out why. Your baby might be overstimulated. You see, her brain and nervous system are taking in lots of information, but she isn’t able to process it, so she becomes cranky and scared. Even everyday actions like feeding and contact can trigger it.

What is overstimulation?

Overstimulation is when your child is overwhelmed by his environment, including sensations, noises, and activity. His brain can’t process all the information coming in fast enough, so he becomes frightened and upset.

You’ve probably seen this behavior when a child is at a party and being passed around to all the adults, or when a child is playing in a room full of similar-aged children who are all yelling and banging their toys.

Overstimulation doesn’t always come on at once, either. It can happen after a long day. For example, if your child spends all day at preschool, then an afterschool lesson, playtime at home with the siblings can be too much.

What are the signs of overstimulation?

Overstimulated newborns will display the usual signs of fussiness and tiredness. They will also make cringing facial expressions and jerk their heads away from you in an attempt to reduce the amount of information coming into their brain. Their hands might ball into fists. You will also notice their arms and legs waving as if warding off sensations.

Children who can speak might suddenly become withdrawn and unwilling to cooperate with whatever activity is planned. He or she might refuse to attend the class or play with their friend, or suddenly dislike something you know he/she likes. You’ll also notice behavior problems crop up that you thought were taken care of, like shouting or refusing to share.

You need to balance active and quiet time.

It’s great that you want your baby to learn about the world and grow quickly, but you shouldn’t constantly dangle toys in your baby’s face or insist on scheduling activities all day. Children need predictable, regular quiet time in a familiar setting just like you or I. Let your baby play quietly when she wants. She’ll use this time to learn how to occupy and soothe herself. It may notlook like she’s learning, but she is.

How do you handle overstimulation?

If your baby is overwhelmed, remove her from that area. Take her to a quiet, dim room with no activity. If you’re out somewhere, place her in her carrier or stroller and cover it so she can’t see the outside world. Swaddling newborns can help reduce their physical sensations, as will placing them in a sling or holding them close to your body.

You can help overstimulated toddlers by reducing noise and motion in the room as well. Turn off the TV or radio and bring the child to a familiar place, like her bedroom. Determine if your child needs you close or needs you to walk away. Help her put her feelings into words so you can help her in the future. If you decide to stay near, engage in a peaceful, quiet activity like reading or simply cuddling.

Truthfully, there’s no right amount of stimulation. It depends on the child and the situation. You’ll have to use your baby as a guide and adjust the environment as you see fit. Let your child be the guide.

Let’s face it, smarter people tend to (not always, but often) lead easier lives, perform a job that doesn’t tax the body, and even make more money. Who wouldn’t want that for their children? We can usher them in that direction by taking steps to improve their brain’s development earlier in life. Play time isn’t all fun and games – it’s full of learning! Here’s how you can help.

1. Encourage babbling.

When your baby speaks gibberish to you, he’s actually attempting to communicate. Don’t disregard him or speak baby talk back. Respond as if he said something meaningful and then pause for his part in the dialogue. You’ll encourage speech development this way.

2. Arrange messy play.

Set up a space and then let your baby experiment with messy play materials, like water, mud or sand. These textures give him a chance to interact with something unusual and unlike anything he’s experienced before.

3. Include other children.

Before a year old, kids aren’t really capable of playing with one another, but just playing nearby can improve their development. They’ll witness how the other baby behaves and how he/she is using toys. It’s a different perspective.

4. Start the day with activity.

Be as active as possible early in the day. Early activity sets a tone for the body. Your baby will be awake and inclined to take in as much as possible. A slow start can leave your baby sluggish and unwilling to play.

5. Avoid overstimulation.

During play time, you want to let your baby move from toy to toy at his own pace. Don’t bring too many toys into the play area. Too many options can be overwhelming and force little minds to shut down or become cranky.

6. Skip playtime when your baby needs something else.

Convincing your baby to enjoy play time while he’s hungry, wet, or crabby is futile. Even if you get him to push his truck or shake his rattle, his brain isn’t in the right mindset to gain much from it. Meet his needs first so he can focus on learning.

7. Create a passion for books.

Just because reading is a passive activity doesn’t mean books can’t be a part of play. Use books with large, colorful pictures of animals and people. Make silly voices and animal sounds to match the story. Be as entertaining as possible so your baby associates fun and silliness with reading, thus creating a lifelong enjoyment of it.

8. Play “mimic” games.

Games that require your baby to mimic your movements are excellent tools for development. Play games like patty-cake, peekaboo, this little piggy, etc. You can encourage movement by imitating the behavior once, then placing the toy in your baby’s hand and encouraging him to do the same. For example, show him how to shake a rattle by placing it in his grasp and shaking his wrist.

6 Great Baby Books to Read to Your Little One

best baby booksI think reading is exceptionally important. It’s best to start when your child is as young as possible. Even though he can’t read, you need to make the exploration of books a positive experience so that when he can read on his own, he’ll be drawn to them.

In the beginning, don’t try to impart knowledge. Your baby doesn’t need to read the classics. Choose books that are colorful and full of pictures. Use silly voices and encourage your little one to act out with you. Concentrate on making the experience of reading as fun as possible.

Here are some of my favorite books to read to my son. Hopefully your family can enjoy them as well.

1. Bunny My Honey

This darling book follows a mother rabbit teaching her little one how to be a bunny, like jumping, running, and twitching one’s nose. You’re introduced to Bunny’s friends, the other animals, who learn to do other animal things. Bunny gets lost in the woods, but don’t worry – Mommy saves the day. It’s a touching story about relationships.

2. Baby Faces

I like this book because it introduces a baby to other children. It’s great if your kid doesn’t interact much with people his own age. It’s also softly padded, so little hands can maneuver it. The pictures are silly, but that’s plenty of entertainment for baby.

3. Counting Kisses

This is a story that relates to all the important people in your baby’s life. Everyone in the family (even the pets) take turns giving baby a kiss goodnight. You could use this book to help explain the relationships of family members to your baby.

4. Eyes, Nose, Fingers, and Toes

In this book, a group of playful toddlers learn about their bodies and what each part can do. They examine feet, hands, legs, arms, and everything else. By mimicking the children in the book, your little one can experiment with his or her own body.

5. Goodnight Moon

This is the quintessential bedtime story. It’s been around for a while; several generations have read it. From his bed, the little bunny says goodnight to his friends and bedroom items. Then, he falls asleep peacefully. It’s a great way to teach your child about bedtime.

6. The Very Hungry Caterpillar

This is a great book to explore the nature of different kinds of foods with your toddler. The hungry caterpillar eats, well, just about everything – including the book! As the caterpillar grows, eventually he makes a cocoon and turns into a butterfly.

10 Tips to Help Relieve Gas in Babies

relieve baby gasBaby gas is, unfortunately, unavoidable. It’s something every baby has to deal with while the brand new digestive system becomes more mature. Typically the gas comes from either air swallowed during feedings and crying, or harmless bacteria in the gut that breaks down sugars from food. Here are some ways to give your little one some relief.

1. Remove gassy foods from mom’s diet.

Babies might be gassy if their breastfeeding mothers eat gas-forming foods like broccoli, sprouts, beans, cauliflower, and onions. Cease eating these foods and you’ll probably see your baby’s gas abate.

2. Carry your baby around.

When you carry your baby, hold her in a way that puts pressure on her stomach. Carry her in the football hold (lying down on your forearm with legs straddling your elbow) or upright in a carrier or sling.

3. Manipulate her legs.

Often your baby can’t get gas relief because she isn’t able to manipulate her body (like you and I can) to move the gas bubbles down. Lie her on her back and move her legs in a “bicycle” fashion. This will put pressure on her stomach and move the bubbles out.

4. Spend more time on her tummy.

If you aren’t already, let baby spend more time on her tummy throughout the day. Not only will this strengthen her neck, back and legs, but it can help move gas bubbles down.

5. Burp during feedings in addition to after.

To prevent a buildup of gas that makes your baby uncomfortable, pause during a feeding to give your baby a quick burping. At the end of the feeding, burp again to make sure it’s all out.

6. Keep baby’s head up during feedings.

While you’re feeding your baby, make sure her head is elevated above her body. Tip the bottle slightly so the air inside rises to the top, rather than down through the nipple into your baby’s stomach.

7. Give an infant massage.

Everyone loves a massage, including babies. Lie her down on her back and give a gentle massage with your fingertips, starting from beneath the ribcage down toward her diaper. Looks for signs of discomfort. If you’re making her twitch in pain, stop immediately.

8. Feed baby before she cries.

If she’s getting gas into her system from crying, try meeting her needs before she gets to that point. Offer a bottle or your breast when you know it’s feeding time. Check her diaper often so you can change her before she’s irritated.

9. Make sure the bottle’s nipple isn’t too wide.

If you’re bottle feeding, a wipe nipple can cause air to pass down with the milk. Sometimes nipples can crack and expand after repeated use, so you’ll have to replace it.

10. Seek your doctor’s advice.

If your baby is still struggling with gas and you’ve done everything you can, you may want to seek your doctor’s opinion. Your doctor may prescribe a gas-relief aid (likely simethicone, sold as Mylicon) to help break up the bubbles, or something to help digestion.
