My “AHA!” Moment…. The change of a Mother/Daughter Relationship After Birth of Baby

My Mom and I have always been close. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had our fair share of arguments over the years, mostly when I was a teenager, but none the less, I grew up knowing I had a Mom who loved me unconditionally. But what I didn’t know, what I truly didn’t comprehend, was the depth of her love for me. That is, I didn’t fully understand the love of a mother until just recently.

I remember the excitement of finding out I was pregnant. After 2 long years of trying, including a devastating miscarriage (Ill come back to this at a later date); was it even possible that I could be pregnant??! I stood there just staring at the pregnancy stick, my heart pounding with happiness and disbelief!! Not quite a dark line, but not too faint either! Was the line even there? Was it just wishful thinking? Maybe I was hallucinating? Should I take another test? But it was there! That pink line-even if it was the faintest of faint, was there!! I’m gonna be a mom!!! I knew at that very moment that there would never be another baby loved more than mine.

Thinking back, I recall the first time I heard my baby’s heart beat, it suddenly became real! The thumping of his mirrored my own! It was loud and fast! I felt as if our heart beats were one! This is MY baby, I thought! I am FINALLY gonna be a mommy!

I couldn’t wait for my first ultrasound. Who would it look like? Would it be a boy or girl? Did I even want to know it’s sex? All I DID know, was that wanted to see my baby! And then, there HE was! My SON! I was in love!

Seeing our baby boy in 3D for the 1st time!

Seeing our baby boy in 3D for the 1st time!!

As my belly grew bigger, so did my connection to him. I imagined how I would feel when I held him in my arms the very first time. But then, a sense of panic set in…I had to first push this baby out of me! And no thanks to my sister in law, who showed me a Youtube video of a live birth, I was mortified, to say the least!

Seriously though, nothing was more amazing then the day my baby was born! I held him in my arms and knew that I could never love anything more. The love was so deep it shook my inner core. I was totally consumed and overwhelmed by the emotions I felt for him.

And at that very second I felt this connection to my mother that I had never felt before. I finally got it! My “AHA” moment…I realized that my mother had that same love, the different love that only a  mother has for their offspring. As a child you love your parents, but as a parent the love of your child is indescribable, the most intense love one human can feel. I get it now mom, I completely understand.. On October 21, 2010, the day my son was born, my life forever changed in more ways than one.

Like most new moms, Lisa had been up night after night changing her newborn son’s diaper. She was so exhausted she could barely function, let alone match up the tiny snaps on her baby’s pajamas.

Frustrated by endless mis-snapping and re-snapping, Lisa found zippered pajamas, and thought her problems had been solved. That night when she unzipped her son’s pajamas, he started to cry from the shock of cold air. Although less time consuming, Lisa hated that she had to expose her baby’s entire body with the zipper. She felt her baby’s comfort should come first and yearned for the perfect footed pajama, which was both soft and cozy for her baby and hassle-free for mommy.

One night while feeding her son she thought of “Zippyz.” Zippyz are patented footed baby pajamas for easy and fast diaper changes with 3 snaps on the chest and a zipper from foot to belly. Finally, a solution suitable for baby AND mommy! Plus Zippyz are a unique baby shower gift! Along with her best friend and business partner Erica, Lisa decided make the diaper changing world a better place for all new parents!

The Different Styles of Parenting

Different Styles of ParentingWhile there’s no exact recipe to being the perfect parent for your child, there are certainly various styles that could be beneficial for them. Some parents prefer to give their children more freedom to learn and grow on their own, while others can’t get enough of this process. Check out these different styles of parenting for kids:

Autocratic

Autocratic parenting is where parents establish the rules and expect that children will follow them without exception. Children have little to no involvement in problem-solving challenges or obstacles. These parents are also big on using punishments to teach lessons to their children.

Instinctive

Instinctive parenting is solely based on “going with your gut” and making decisions for your children based on this feeling. This style is heavily influenced by how the parents themselves were raised as children, as they will usually go with what feels “right” when deciding on a matter.

Permissive

Permissive parents don’t offer much discipline and prefer to take on the “friend” role. They’ll encourage children to be more open with them in conversations and issues in life. They tend to be lenient and may only step in when there is a serious problem. There may be few consequences for misbehavior because parents have an attitude that kids are just young and learning.

Authoritative

Authoritative parents have rules that children are expected to follow, but they allow some exceptions to the rule. They often tell children the reasons for the rules and they are more willing to consider a child’s feelings when setting limits. Rather than punishing a child for their mistakes, this type of parent will instead let consequence serve as the learning tool for a problem.

Attachment

Attachment parenting describes a style of parenting where parents attempt to build as strong of an emotional bond as they possibly can with their child. These parents will promptly tend to their child’s every need and be very sensitive and emotionally available to their kids. They hope that by building this strong of a bond, their children are more likely to trust them with any and all problems in the future.

Helicopter

Helicopter parenting is a unique style in which parents are generally not authoritative about issues, but rather will oversee almost all matters that the child is involved in. They tend to “hover” over their kids, like a helicopter would do. They want to constantly be involved with everything their child is doing, whether positive or negative.

6 Helpful Tips for Newborn Care

Newborn CareBringing home a newborn baby can be a very hectic, exciting, and confusing time for parents. There is so much information that you will learn on your own throughout the parenting process, but it never hurts to read up and do some research. While it can definitely be an overwhelming time in your life, all that matters is that you’re striving to be the best parent you can be. Here are some helpful tips for newborn care:

1. Seek Advice

As a parent to a newborn child, you should never hesitate to seek advice from others who have more experience. Whether that means calling your doctor about a particular problem or just asking a fellow mom for a simple answer. It’s been shown that women who seek help with nursing issues have a much higher success rate, and this can apply to most topics of childcare.

2. Cry it Out

A newborn baby will inevitably cry – a lot! Since new parents aren’t familiar with this reaction to almost anything, it’s easy to see how this could cause some trouble. Your child could be newly diapered and well fed, and they’ll still find another reason to start crying. As long as you’re sure that nothing is wrong, it’s okay to allow your baby to simply cry it out sometimes.

3. Avoid Panic

Not surprisingly, new parents tend to panic over anything and everything that happens to their child. It’s important not to waste all that time worrying when, most of the time, there’s absolutely nothing wrong. When a baby spits up, vomits, or seems a little sick, these can be taken care of fairly easily and should not force you into a panic.

4. Early and Often

Anything that you expect your child to learn as they grow and develop, be sure to start as early as possible. Get a head start on communicating with them, potty training, basic shapes and colors, counting, and anything else you can think of to practice. Even though you know they won’t be able to respond with words from the start, there’s nothing wrong with getting them used to communication.

5. Perfect Parenting

One of the most important things to remember throughout your journey with a newborn child is that there’s no secret to perfect parenting. Reading and researching best practices for various parenting topics and issues is always a great idea, but you must ultimately make the judgment for how you will raise your child.

6. Have Fun

Throughout all the sleepless nights and hours spent trying to soothe your child, don’t forget to enjoy the entire experience! Time flies when we’re wrapped up in our daily jobs and activities, and it seems to pass by even faster with a child. Take plenty of pictures, keep notes in the baby book, and have fun all along the way!

Hot Trends in Baby Names of 2015

Hot Baby Name Trends of 2015

Becoming a parent is not easy and some of you might be having a difficult time finding the right name for your baby. Most people already know which baby name is their favorite. Maybe it was a significant relative who inspired them, or maybe they’ve had one particular name in mind for a long time.

Many people don’t have the slightest idea, though, and they need to find inspiration elsewhere. As a website offering all sorts of baby names, BellyBallot.com is a perfect solution to this problem. Baby names are conveniently divided into categories and lists by popularity or ethnic origin, and the site even offers fun groups such as “Aristocratic”, “Last Names for First”, or “Heroic”.

Parents have become really bold and adventurous in the year 2015, looking for names that will make their child stick out from the crowd. Most of the newest trends are unique and original:

1. Ethnic names – Parents always think of their origin and ethnicity when choosing the right name for their baby, so this trend is not entirely new. This year, however, we’re seeing a flood of Scottish and Celtic names – Greer, Isla, Lachlan, Fiona or Duncan.

2. Defining, daring names – Making a clear statement, these names are powerful and intense. Becoming a popular trend with celebrities, some of these names include Rowdy, Titan, Noble, Royal, Saint or Breaker.

3. Names based on fictional characters – Popular TV shows and films have inspired parents all over the world for decades. Depending on which shows are “in” or “out”, we can see new names every year becoming parents’ favorites. This year it is Sky, Milo, Anastasia, Piper, Elsa, Lisbeth or Vito.

4. Food-inspired names – Food culture is a big deal nowadays and so are baby names inspired by food – welcome Clementine, Kale, Apple or Juniper!

5. Comeback of unisex names for boys – In the past, whenever a unisex name became really popular for girls, parents had a tendency to disqualify the name for boys. Now we’re seeing that trend reverse and boys are taking their names back – Tatum, Kelly, Darian, Rory, Jordan, Loren, Casey or Jamie are parents’ favorites for boys again!

6. Vibrant, colorful names – Inspired by hues and colors, parents are now bringing back a once popular baby name trend – meet Lavender, Violet, Azure, Scarlett, Crimson or Mauve!

7. Names with O at the end – Names ending in a vowel (mostly an O) have been around for a while, but they were usually used for boys. Now there are more and more of these becoming popular for girls as well – Shiloh, Marlow, Juno, Margot, Willow or Monroe.

8. Names from the South – Parents love to be inspired by traditional names of the US southern states, and names such as June, Tennessee, Georgia, August, Dune or Carolina are skyrocketing.

9. Simple, short names – There’s beauty in simplicity, they say, and we can see that trend coming from Europe. Names that were formerly just a nickname are now used on their own – Tess, Lou, Ben, Finn, Max, Jack and others.

How to Relax on a Family Vacation

Relax on a Family VacationAs if vacation isn’t relaxing enough, sometimes parents are looking for that additional feeling of not having a care in the world! With all the stress of our daily jobs and chores, it’s such a great feeling to be able to take a vacation and enjoy the calmness and serenity of relaxation. Here are some great ways to relax while on your next family vacation:

Spa

The spa is well known as one of the most relaxing places you can visit, and especially while on vacation. Since most resorts and vacation destinations offer spa treatments, parents should take the time out of their day to enjoy a relaxing massage and/or facial, while letting the kids have fun on their own.

Sunbathing

If you’re on vacation, there’s a good chance you’ve traveled to someplace warm and sunny. When you get the chance, head to the nearest beach, set up a comfortable lounge chair, and just soak up the sun! It sounds so simple, but the feeling of relaxation is inevitable when you have nothing to worry about aside from sunburn!

Keep it Simple

While it’s always smart to plan out each day of your vacation, try to keep it as simple as possible. The last thing you want to do is worry about schedules and meeting times during your vacation away from work. Try to plan one primary activity for the day and let the cards fall as they may! This will undoubtedly lead to a more relaxed trip for the entire family.

Connecting Rooms

When booking the hotel that your family will stay in, try to find ones that offer connecting rooms. You owe it to yourself as parents, and to your children, to provide separate living quarters while on vacation. The adults deserve privacy and peace and quiet when necessary, and the kids will have a much better time at night knowing they don’t have to be super quiet to appease their parents.

Book with a Budget

Booking with a budget in mind doesn’t mean settling for a poor quality vacation in order to save money. Try to book your family trip with a budget in mind to take the pressure off of you once you actually make it to your destination. If you’re able to get a great deal and/or save money in the booking process, there will be a lot less stress about spending money and having a good time while on your vacation.

Teaching Your Children to Go Green

Teaching Your Children to Go GreenTaking steps to protect our environment is often a lifestyle adjustment for adults. It’s not easy being green if you weren’t raised that way. It’s on us to pass along the three R’s to our children. Reduce, Recycle, Reuse. Here are some ways you can instill eco-friendly habits in our children that will follow them into adulthood.

Reduce

Energy Use. There’s never a better time to teach someone about energy conservation than during childhood. Remind generation x to unplug their electronic devices from the wall when they are fully charged in addition to turning off the lights during the day. These constant reminders will change the way your children handle energy.

IDEA: Make solar s’mores. Children love s’mores, and you probably do too! This is a fun group project you can do with your children to teach them all about of natural energy. With household items like cardboard, and aluminum foil with sticks and stones you can create solar powered oven powerful enough to make delicious s’mores.

Recycle

Recycling is simple to do but it plays such a huge part in protecting our environment. Separating plastics/glass from paper and trash we can have positively impact our world.  Excess waste has detrimental effects on our planet. Recycling helps reduce the harmful pollutants used in landfills.

IDEA: Recycle incentive. By labeling garbage cans and giving our children the responsibility of separating the garbage appropriately, we reinforce the importance of recycling. Children love a good game. Providing a small incentive like a trip to the movies, or pizza night after one month of perfectly separated trash will keep them motivated to keep recycling.

Reuse

In addition to showing children how to appropriately dispose of papers, plastic and trash on garbage day, teach them how to refurbish. Trash isn’t always garbage. There are tons of fun ways to recycle, revamp and refurbish items around the house. Many of these ways can be fun!  DIY crafts from repurpose items and donating clothes are some of the best ways to introduce recycling habits to children. Once children begin to see the value of otherwise useless items, they will develop the habit of finding ways to reuse items before they discard them.

IDEA:  Create Customized Organization Containers. It’s easy to toss your old baby wipe boxes and jars once you’re done with them, but there are tons of ways items can be repurposed for storage and even art.

Tell us your favorite ways you go green with your children in the comment section below!

7 Fun and Useful Parenting Hacks to Try Out

Useful Parenting HacksI don’t think you’ll be able to find any parents who would tell you that taking care of kids is an easy job. While you need to take good care of your child to make sure that they are happily growing up, you also need to take care of all your other life’s tasks. Luckily there are plenty of “hacks” to make parenting easier and more fun for both you and your kids. Try some of these parenting hacks with your children:

1. Tank Top Barrette

If you have a daughter, there are probably plenty of cute barrettes around the house. This hack is especially helpful for when you receive an item of clothing as a gift that may be a little too big on your child. Simply grab one of her barrettes and clip it to both strings in the back of the tank top to make for a better fit!

2. Monster Spray

Scare away those monsters with monster spray! Fill a spray bottle with water and decorate it to make it special. If your child complains about monsters, give the likely hiding spots a quick spray to ease your child’s fears.

3. Clean-Up Game

This hack is not only fun for your child but it’ll actually help you clean the house. When it comes time to sweep the kitchen, make a small square on the floor with tape, in which your child will aim to sweep any dirt into. This also helps develop their coordination and motor skills in the process!

4. Travel Art Kit

A DVD case makes a convenient spot to hold crayons, colored pencils and a bit of paper. It snaps up nicely so nothing gets lost. This is a great way to let your kid be creative while you are on the go.

5. Draw Their Feet

How many times have you made it to the store for new baby clothes and realized you don’t know which size shoe will fit them right? Rather than dragging your child along for the errands, simply draw their feet on a piece of paper and bring it with you for shoe shopping! You don’t have to worry about their shoes being too small anymore!

6. Portable High Chair

With the purchase of a portable high chair, your life will be made so much easier with your child. This portable product will allow you to feed your child easily and effectively anywhere you go. With children getting hungry so quickly, this will come in handy!

7. Shoe Caddy Storage

When you take a long car trip, you’ll want to bring plenty of items to distract your kids, but they can make a mess in the car. Use a shoe caddy to hang on your backseat and keep everything organized.

infant support pillowGuest Blog by Alicia Overby – Founder & President of Baby Elephant Ears

Alicia is wife, mother, and creator of Baby Elephant Ears. Baby Elephant Ears was created out of parental concern, not financial desire. In 2005, when their second child was an infant, he cried all the time and just couldn’t seem to get comfortable.

After seeking advice and suggestion from the medical community and alternative medicine, they eventually ended up in the chiropractors office where their baby was successfully treated for asubluxation, discomfort most likely the result of the strain during labor, which was now being exacerbated by the normal lack of infant neck strength. Only proper neck, head, and back alignment would offer him relief. When they couldn’t find a product to give their baby the necessary support, Alicia took matters into her own hands and crafted her own infant support pillow. The first Baby Elephant Ears was born!

5 Ways to Make Unique Family Memories

Make Unique Family MemoriesAs our kids grow up, there comes a time when we look back and ourselves, “Where did all the time go?” In fact, we ask ourselves that often. We’ll look at one of our children and realize they aren’t the little peanut we brought home from the hospital a few years back. Suddenly this little person is moving around the house and having opinions of their own.

We can’t stop time, but we can do some things to make sure we remember the formative years.

1. Schedule one-on-one time – When we’re in a crowd, even if it’s full of family members, there’s no way to get alone time with your child. In this busy day and age where there’s a thousand things to do, we have to schedule one-on-one time. Find time to do something you both like and share enjoyment.

2. Make holidays unique – Holidays have a special place in all of our memories. We can talk about that funny thing that happened July 4th ’07, or the special Christmas decoration mom bought in 20011. You can help build special memories by adhering to some traditions and starting some new ones. Do something unique, like play a special game on Thanksgiving or watch a certain movie on Christmas Eve.

3. Take family vacations – I know not every family can afford an elaborate family trip to an exotic location everywhere, but there are plenty of cheap options available. The trick is to get away from the normal and experience something different as a family; something you’ll be able to talk about for years to come. Take a road trip to visit a relative or simply go camping.

4. Save as much as you can – Every time you do something as a family that you want to remember, try to save something from the event. For example, save your airline tickets from the flight, or the menu from that theme restaurant, or their favorite baby pajamas. Keep all these keepsakes in a box that you can leaf through from time to time to trigger the memories.

5. Share meals together – There’s something intrinsic to our biology about sharing meals together. Have a party in your home and you’ll notice that most people tend to congregate near the kitchen. Every significant holiday we celebrate together involves food. Make sure that you and your family spend several nights each week having proper meal at the table.

How does your family make and preserve memories?

footed pajamas for fast diaper changesWritten by Lisa Youngelson, Owner of Zippyz

The Differences Between Your 4th Child and Your First

The Differences Between Your 4th Child and Your FirstWhen you have your first child, everything is new and a bit scary. You’re unsure of yourself, constantly asking questions and calling your pediatrician. By your second baby, you have a handle on things. Life isn’t so scary, but you still insist everyone wash their hands before touching your baby. The third baby is pretty simple; you have the help of the first two to get things done and you’re basically a pro. By the fourth baby, things are very different…

1. There are a lot less photos

During your first pregnancy, you probably took a photo of your belly every week. You took a photo of your child every day and posted it to Facebook immediately. It’s all so new that you had to document every moment of it. Your next kids, however, didn’t get such a treatment.

2. People celebrate a whole lot less

For your first baby, family you didn’t even know you had suddenly appeared to bestow gifts. Your neighbors from three streets over introduce themselves just to see the baby. Your home is overrun by baby gear and cute outfits. By your fourth kid, people have lost track of your pregnancies and aren’t sure if you have a brood of children or if you’ve started a mobile daycare.

3. You relax your hygiene rules

The first baby got a new outfit every time she drooled. You passed out hand sanitizer to friends who wanted to hold her. Now you’re wiping your last child’s mouth with her sleeve or even your thumb, handing her off to people without a second thought, and you aren’t sure how long she’s been wearing that onesie.

4. Illnesses are a lot more common

When it was just you, your spouse and your first baby, illnesses weren’t that common. There was the usual baby sniffles and occasional ear infection, but nothing serious. With a house full of kids, however, disease seems to materialize from nowhere and everyone gets it. Your last child has had a perpetual runny nose since birth.

5. You don’t worry about milestones

Is he holding his head up enough? Is he rolling over on time? Does he look like he’ll walk soon? There’s a lot of anxiety for new parents who are concerned that their child is developing on schedule. For the later kids, you won’t even stop to consider if things are happening “on time.”

6. You pay a little less attention

I’m not saying you love your newest child any less. Of course not. But you there’s no way you can keep the same level attention to detail as you could for your first. In the beginning, you might have kept a poop diary, scheduled your life around his naps, and carefully selected any TV programs that might be within earshot. On the fourth child, however, you let a lot of that go and cast your worries aside.

infant support pillowGuest Blog by Alicia Overby – Founder & President of Baby Elephant Ears
