My “AHA!” Moment…. The change of a Mother/Daughter Relationship After Birth of Baby

My Mom and I have always been close. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had our fair share of arguments over the years, mostly when I was a teenager, but none the less, I grew up knowing I had a Mom who loved me unconditionally. But what I didn’t know, what I truly didn’t comprehend, was the depth of her love for me. That is, I didn’t fully understand the love of a mother until just recently.

I remember the excitement of finding out I was pregnant. After 2 long years of trying, including a devastating miscarriage (Ill come back to this at a later date); was it even possible that I could be pregnant??! I stood there just staring at the pregnancy stick, my heart pounding with happiness and disbelief!! Not quite a dark line, but not too faint either! Was the line even there? Was it just wishful thinking? Maybe I was hallucinating? Should I take another test? But it was there! That pink line-even if it was the faintest of faint, was there!! I’m gonna be a mom!!! I knew at that very moment that there would never be another baby loved more than mine.

Thinking back, I recall the first time I heard my baby’s heart beat, it suddenly became real! The thumping of his mirrored my own! It was loud and fast! I felt as if our heart beats were one! This is MY baby, I thought! I am FINALLY gonna be a mommy!

I couldn’t wait for my first ultrasound. Who would it look like? Would it be a boy or girl? Did I even want to know it’s sex? All I DID know, was that wanted to see my baby! And then, there HE was! My SON! I was in love!

Seeing our baby boy in 3D for the 1st time!

Seeing our baby boy in 3D for the 1st time!!

As my belly grew bigger, so did my connection to him. I imagined how I would feel when I held him in my arms the very first time. But then, a sense of panic set in…I had to first push this baby out of me! And no thanks to my sister in law, who showed me a Youtube video of a live birth, I was mortified, to say the least!

Seriously though, nothing was more amazing then the day my baby was born! I held him in my arms and knew that I could never love anything more. The love was so deep it shook my inner core. I was totally consumed and overwhelmed by the emotions I felt for him.

And at that very second I felt this connection to my mother that I had never felt before. I finally got it! My “AHA” moment…I realized that my mother had that same love, the different love that only a  mother has for their offspring. As a child you love your parents, but as a parent the love of your child is indescribable, the most intense love one human can feel. I get it now mom, I completely understand.. On October 21, 2010, the day my son was born, my life forever changed in more ways than one.

Like most new moms, Lisa had been up night after night changing her newborn son’s diaper. She was so exhausted she could barely function, let alone match up the tiny snaps on her baby’s pajamas.

Frustrated by endless mis-snapping and re-snapping, Lisa found zippered pajamas, and thought her problems had been solved. That night when she unzipped her son’s pajamas, he started to cry from the shock of cold air. Although less time consuming, Lisa hated that she had to expose her baby’s entire body with the zipper. She felt her baby’s comfort should come first and yearned for the perfect footed pajama, which was both soft and cozy for her baby and hassle-free for mommy.

One night while feeding her son she thought of “Zippyz.” Zippyz are patented footed baby pajamas for easy and fast diaper changes with 3 snaps on the chest and a zipper from foot to belly. Finally, a solution suitable for baby AND mommy! Plus Zippyz are a unique baby shower gift! Along with her best friend and business partner Erica, Lisa decided make the diaper changing world a better place for all new parents!

The Different Styles of Parenting

Different Styles of ParentingWhile there’s no exact recipe to being the perfect parent for your child, there are certainly various styles that could be beneficial for them. Some parents prefer to give their children more freedom to learn and grow on their own, while others can’t get enough of this process. Check out these different styles of parenting for kids:

Autocratic

Autocratic parenting is where parents establish the rules and expect that children will follow them without exception. Children have little to no involvement in problem-solving challenges or obstacles. These parents are also big on using punishments to teach lessons to their children.

Instinctive

Instinctive parenting is solely based on “going with your gut” and making decisions for your children based on this feeling. This style is heavily influenced by how the parents themselves were raised as children, as they will usually go with what feels “right” when deciding on a matter.

Permissive

Permissive parents don’t offer much discipline and prefer to take on the “friend” role. They’ll encourage children to be more open with them in conversations and issues in life. They tend to be lenient and may only step in when there is a serious problem. There may be few consequences for misbehavior because parents have an attitude that kids are just young and learning.

Authoritative

Authoritative parents have rules that children are expected to follow, but they allow some exceptions to the rule. They often tell children the reasons for the rules and they are more willing to consider a child’s feelings when setting limits. Rather than punishing a child for their mistakes, this type of parent will instead let consequence serve as the learning tool for a problem.

Attachment

Attachment parenting describes a style of parenting where parents attempt to build as strong of an emotional bond as they possibly can with their child. These parents will promptly tend to their child’s every need and be very sensitive and emotionally available to their kids. They hope that by building this strong of a bond, their children are more likely to trust them with any and all problems in the future.

Helicopter

Helicopter parenting is a unique style in which parents are generally not authoritative about issues, but rather will oversee almost all matters that the child is involved in. They tend to “hover” over their kids, like a helicopter would do. They want to constantly be involved with everything their child is doing, whether positive or negative.

6 Things All First Time Parents Should Know

Things All First Time Parents Should KnowHaving your first child can be a very hectic, exciting, and confusing time for parents. While it can definitely be an overwhelming time in your life, all that matters is that you’re striving to be the best parent you can be. There are so many little bits of information that will be learned throughout the parenting process, but it also helps to do your research before the baby arrives as well. Here’s a helpful list of things all first time parents should know:

1. No Sleep

As soon as the little one arrives home from the hospital, you can pretty much kiss a good night’s sleep goodbye for a while. Your newborn will require constant attention and care, and short naps are a lot more likely than a full night of sleep.

2. Start Early

Anything that you expect your child to learn as they grow and develop, be sure to start as early as possible. Get a head start on communicating with them, potty training, basic shapes and colors, counting, and anything else you can think of to practice.

3. Crying

Expect your baby to cry. Whether your child is hungry, thirsty, tired, needs to be changed, or for absolutely no reason at all, you need to be prepared for the tantrums. At such a young age, crying is about the only way a baby can express its discomfort of something, so the crying is an inevitable result of having a kid.

4. Plenty of Care

There will be a ton of maintenance to be done with your newborn. Your baby will be hungry and need diaper changes every few hours, will need their skin cared for, have to take multiple naps, and need tending to when they throw a tantrum; and this is all just one day!

5. No Secret

One of the most important things to remember throughout your first journey with a child is that there’s no secret to perfect parenting. Reading and researching best practices for various parenting topics and issues is always a great idea, but you must ultimately make the judgment for how you will raise your child.

6. Enjoy!

Throughout all the sleepless nights and hours spent trying to soothe your child, don’t forget to enjoy the entire experience! Time flies when we’re wrapped up in our daily jobs and activities, and it seems to pass by even faster with a child. Take plenty of pictures, keep notes in the baby book, and have fun all along the way!

8 Spring Time Activities for the Whole Family

Spring Time Activities for the Whole FamilyWhen the sun is finally shining after spending months in the house all winter, both parents and their kids are looking for ways to enjoy the spring. Staring at screens day-in and day-out is much more exhausting than we think. Let’s get out of the house and off of the phone! Here are some ways to take you and your kids back to the days of old school fun.

Warning: This blog may cause extreme nostalgia!

1. Family picnic

Unfortunately so many people have forgotten the simple joy of gathering up a few friends and lying out in the park to eat sandwiches. Yes, people still do this, but not enough people. Did you know some kids don’t even know what a game of handball is in 2015? Show your kids the joy of park play and eating sandwiches. Bring a speaker for music and leave the tablets at home.

2. Bike riding

When we were children, it was a milestone in life to learn to ride a bike. Now, it’s pretty cool but not as common. The rush we get from bike riding is still unparalleled. The springtime is the perfect time to blow the dust off your two-wheeler and show your family around the neighborhood without the car. This is a workout and a ton of fun for both you and them.

3. Start a photo journal

Flowers blooming and birds chirping shouldn’t go undocumented. Taking your family outside to observe some of Mother Nature’s most beautiful creations is a fun way to bond. Try to learn photography techniques with your children then create a photo journal to look back on for years to come.

4. Blow bubbles

Nothing says it’s warm outside more than the effortless joy of blowing bubbles in the back yard. Young children love to play and dance amidst bubbles and they don’t get to see them as much these days. Turn up the music and blow a couple of bubbles. This is an easy way to celebrate spring without draining too much energy. (Bubble blowing machines are acceptable!)

5. Go to community sports games

Did you know most communities have dedicated sports teams? Show your community, school, or even job’s sporting team some love and show support in the bleachers. These events are often vastly under-attended in many communities so they’ll be glad you came. If you’re up to the challenge, your family can even sign up!

6. Wash the car together

“I don’t want my car washed for free,” said no one ever. I’m all for killing two birds with one stone. Most kids are really excited about the idea of helping mom or dad wash the car. Turn on the hose, grab a few sponges and make it a family activity.

7. Hop-scotch

Did you know that people still draw images on the asphalt with chalk? Did you know kids still enjoy it? *gasp* Having permission to go wild on the concrete is still an absolute dream for children. This is the easiest way for them to fulfill their vandalism fantasies without damaging the walls in your house.

8. Go to a carnival

Ferris wheels are still and hopefully will always be “a thing.” If you aren’t scared of heights your child will love experiencing a carnival with you. Cotton candy, bumper cars and clowns are things all millennial children should experience at least once!

infant support pillowGuest Blog by Alicia Overby – Founder & President of Baby Elephant Ears

Alicia is wife, mother, and creator of Baby Elephant Ears. Baby Elephant Ears was created out of parental concern, not financial desire. In 2005, when their second child was an infant, he cried all the time and just couldn’t seem to get comfortable.

After seeking advice and suggestion from the medical community and alternative medicine, they eventually ended up in the chiropractors office where their baby was successfully treated for asubluxation, discomfort most likely the result of the strain during labor, which was now being exacerbated by the normal lack of infant neck strength. Only proper neck, head, and back alignment would offer him relief. When they couldn’t find a product to give their baby the necessary support, Alicia took matters into her own hands and crafted her own infant support pillow. The first Baby Elephant Ears was born!

6 Ways to Bond With Your Baby

Ways to Bond With Your BabyAs soon as the new baby arrives, parents almost have no other thoughts aside from their child. They want to take care of him/her, play with them, and get in as much bonding as possible each day. Luckily, there are so many different ways you can enjoy bonding activities with your little one. Here are some of our suggestions for doing so:

1. Nursing

Breastfeeding baby is not only a healthy way to engage in feeding time, but it’s one of the most beneficial bonding experiences between mother and child. This activity allows you to get an up close look at your child’s facial expressions and body language as well. Even if you’re unable to nurse, or you’re a dad, bottle feeding with a bunch of talking and interaction is just as good!

2. Sleep Nearby

If you still can’t get enough bonding in during the day, sleep near your child at night. This is also a great way to be ready to take care of any issues that arise in the middle of the night for a newborn. You can rest assured that your baby will be safe and comforted.

Interpret the Cry

While it may be tough to examine while you’re trying to ease your child, interpreting their cry is another great bonding technique. As your baby develops, you’ll learn to figure out the reason behind their crying a lot easier. This will help a lot in terms of fixing any issues that arise.

3. Baby Massage

Giving your little one a gentle massage is a great bonding activity for you two. On top of the bonding, this will also help to relax their muscles, increase circulation, and reduce stress in the process!

4. Playtime

Giving your new baby constant stimulation and play opportunities is not only beneficial to their development and growth, but for your development from parent to child as well. Even if they’re too young to do much with baby toys, you can still have fun with them waving fun objects around and appeasing their sense of sight and touch.

5. Baby Carrier

If you can implement the use of a front baby carrier into your daily routines, you’re killing two birds with one stone! You’ll be able to go about your daily tasks and get important duties finished while also bonding with your child. This technique allows you and baby to be face to face and interacting all day long.

6. Singing

Let’s be honest – we weren’t all blessed with great singing voices. With a new baby however, this doesn’t matter at all! Your child will love to hear the sound of your voice, and singing rhythmic tunes to them is an awesome way to bond with baby.

How to Relax on a Family Vacation

Relax on a Family VacationAs if vacation isn’t relaxing enough, sometimes parents are looking for that additional feeling of not having a care in the world! With all the stress of our daily jobs and chores, it’s such a great feeling to be able to take a vacation and enjoy the calmness and serenity of relaxation. Here are some great ways to relax while on your next family vacation:

Spa

The spa is well known as one of the most relaxing places you can visit, and especially while on vacation. Since most resorts and vacation destinations offer spa treatments, parents should take the time out of their day to enjoy a relaxing massage and/or facial, while letting the kids have fun on their own.

Sunbathing

If you’re on vacation, there’s a good chance you’ve traveled to someplace warm and sunny. When you get the chance, head to the nearest beach, set up a comfortable lounge chair, and just soak up the sun! It sounds so simple, but the feeling of relaxation is inevitable when you have nothing to worry about aside from sunburn!

Keep it Simple

While it’s always smart to plan out each day of your vacation, try to keep it as simple as possible. The last thing you want to do is worry about schedules and meeting times during your vacation away from work. Try to plan one primary activity for the day and let the cards fall as they may! This will undoubtedly lead to a more relaxed trip for the entire family.

Connecting Rooms

When booking the hotel that your family will stay in, try to find ones that offer connecting rooms. You owe it to yourself as parents, and to your children, to provide separate living quarters while on vacation. The adults deserve privacy and peace and quiet when necessary, and the kids will have a much better time at night knowing they don’t have to be super quiet to appease their parents.

Book with a Budget

Booking with a budget in mind doesn’t mean settling for a poor quality vacation in order to save money. Try to book your family trip with a budget in mind to take the pressure off of you once you actually make it to your destination. If you’re able to get a great deal and/or save money in the booking process, there will be a lot less stress about spending money and having a good time while on your vacation.

Arts & Crafts for the Winter Holidays

In my area of the world, it’s gotten real cold but we haven’t had much snow, so the kids are playing indoors for the most part. It is fun to decorate our homes for the holidays, but store-bought decorations can only go so far. Every home needs a few personal touches to feel authentic. Here are some holiday art projects that you can make with the kids to decorate your home.

1. Mitten Cupcake Toppers

Mitten Cupcake Toppers

These are simple, quick and you can add them to any type of cupcake you prefer (although a white frosting looks best). All you have to do is print out an image of mittens, cut them out and tape a toothpick to the back.

2. Paint Chip Christmas Tree

Paint Chip Christmas Tree

This tree made of paint chips can be hung up anywhere – the hallway, the kitchen, or a bedroom. If you live in a small apartment, it can also substitute for a real tree. Basically you just use paint chip samples (or colored paper) cut into triangles to form the shape of a colorful tree. (Helpful tip: lay out your design on the ground before you start securing it to the wall and take a photo so you get the pattern just right.)

3. The Rudolph Wreath

The Rudolph Wreath

Every kid knows the story of Rudolph! It’s a big part of childhood. With just some basic silver garland, a plain wreath, a few antler-like branches, and a red ornament, you can hang Rudolph on your door for everyone to see.

4. Bottle Cap Snowmen

Bottle Cap Snowmen

These are a pretty simple craft you could probably do with the supplies you have at home. All you have to do is paint some bottle caps white, paint on the buttons, eyes and noses, and secure it all together with ribbon. Hang on your tree or wherever!

5. Felt and Ribbon Ornaments

Felt and Ribbon Ornaments

Admittedly, these aren’t simple but they look simply amazing – unlike any ornament you can buy in a box. You’ll need some special supplies and have to follow the directions carefully, but once you make a few it will be easy to reproduce them quickly. Plus you can vary the craft so you have different ornaments.

6. Rudolph Cork Ornament

Rudolph Cork Ornament

There are actually several crafts you can make with your extra wine bottle corks, but Rudolph is my favorite (because the kids get a kick out of it). With a couple twigs, some fabric scraps and a bead or button for the nose, you can make all of Santa’s reindeer plus Rudolph.

The Importance of Family Quality Time

importance of quality time with familySpending quality time with your family can’t be emphasized enough. This is especially the case in today’s society where it seems as if everyone is always busy and there’s very little free time between work, school, chores, errands, and everything else that gets in the way. Regardless of how busy life can get, making sure to keep your family as one of the highest priorities is important to keeping the bond of your family unit strong. Here are some reasons for making quality time with your family:

Make Memories

Families who spend more time together will have more opportunities for memorable moments to occur. Whether these memorable moments occur once a week or once a month, your children will be sure to keep them in mind as they grow older with you. This will also allow for a stronger family bond to be built. A study published in the journal, “Family Relations”, found that families who enjoy group activities together share a stronger emotional bond as well as an ability to adapt well to situations as a family. Having these memories to look back on and cherish later in life will not only bring happiness, but it will serve as a reminder of how strong your family is together and the love that has always existed.

Positive Development

The more time that children are able to spend with their parents, the less likely they are to experiment with illegal substances and find themselves getting into trouble. According to a 2008 study by the University of Minnesota, adolescents who shared dinner with their family five or more times a week lowered their risk of substance abuse by 50 percent as compared to adolescents who shared family meals less than two times a week. This time spent together, whether it be playing, eating, or just hanging around the house, will undoubtedly serve as a valuable prevention from troublesome issues later in life.

Academic Success

A child’s academic success is yet another benefit that is directly related to the amount of quality time your family spends together. Parents who have the time to communicate and interact more with their children usually results in better academic success in their child’s life. Being there for your child to answer questions they may have, listen to their struggles, and discuss possible solutions will go a long way in helping them at school. Remember, you’ve been there before and you’re obviously more experienced, so helping your child with these issues is important.

footed pajamas for fast diaper changesWritten by Lisa Youngelson, Owner of Zippyz

We’re Back From Our Cruise!

Last week our we went on a family cruise to the Caribbean! Cruising with little kids could be a little difficult considering the cramped space of the cabins. However, we still had a blast! With Alexa still in diapers and sleeping in a crib, we had to be very efficient in how we unpacked our room. I packed each day of the kids clothes in Ziploc bags to stay organized. That helped a lot.

This cruise had watersides, a ropes course, rock climbing wall, mini golf, and much more! There was so much to do we never got bored! I loved having this family time and we made so many memories. We also celebrated Ryan’s 4th Birthday! I can’t believe how big he is getting! He was so excited when he woke up to a decorated room. We spent his birthday in St. Maartin. It was so hot, but we had fun sight-seeing on the French side of the island.

Mark and I had an opportunity for some alone time too and we decided to go zip-lining in St. Thomas. That was tons of fun and the views were breathtaking!
