1. Potassium

Potassium helps to control nerve impulses and muscle contractions and maintains fluid balance. Great sources for this mineral include nuts, dried fruit, bananas, bran, raw fruit and vegetables.

2. Vitamin D

Vitamin D promotes bone and tooth formation and helps the body absorb calcium. Good sources include milk and other dairy products, and fish oil. The best source of vitamin D is sunlight.

3. Iron

Iron builds muscle and is essential to healthy red blood cells. Iron deficiency is a risk in adolescence, especially for girls once they begin to menstruate. Beef and other red meats, turkey, pork, spinach, beans, and prunes are all chock full of iron.

4. Zinc

Zinc aids in wound healing and immune function, is essential for normal taste, smell and sight, and can help in the formation of strong bones. Get your children zinc through lean meat, fish, and chicken, milk, whole grains, and nuts.

5. Calcium

Calcium helps build strong bones as a child grows. Calcium can be found in quality amounts in milk, cheese, yogurt, tofu, and calcium-fortified orange juice.

6. Vitamin A

Vitamin A is essential for eyesight, especially night vision and critical for normal growth in children. This vitamin also keeps the skin in the mouth, respiratory tract and urinary tract moist (protects against harmful bacteria). Finally, Vitamin A builds immunity to protect kids from infections. Good sources include milk, cheese, eggs, and yellow-to-orange vegetables like carrots, yams, and squash.

7. Vitamin B Family 

The Vitamin B family includes, B2, B3, B6, and B12. These vitamins aid metabolism, energy production, and healthy circulatory and nervous systems. Good sources include meat, chicken, fish, nuts, eggs, milk, cheese, beans, and soybeans.

8. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is needed for healthy skin, gums, teeth, bones and cartilage. This vitamin also assists with absorption of some types of iron, along with wound healing and resistance to infection. Good sources include citrus fruit, strawberries, kiwi, tomatoes, and green vegetables like broccoli.

9. Magnesium

This mineral provides structure for healthy bones, is involved in the release of energy from food, and is essential for muscle and nerve function. Magnesium can be found in milk, whole grains, green leafy vegetables, legumes, lean meats, nuts, and bananas.

grab and go breakfastIn many houses, mornings are go-go-go time. Everyone has to get ready and get to work and school in just a few hours. As much as we would love to make an elaborate breakfast for our kids every day, it’s usually not in the cards. Here are some easy breakfast ideas to grab-and-go.

1. Waffle Sticks

Rather than pancakes, I prefer to make waffles for breakfast, especially when I’m in a rush. Since waffles are so sturdy, I’ll slice one into three or four strips and let my kids eat them with their hands. If we have a minute to sit down, I’ll let them dunk the waffle sticks into syrup, but if we’re on the move, I’ll sprinkle a bit of powdered sugar for flavor.

2. Breakfast Wrap

My kids love bacon and eggs, but when we’re in a rush there’s no time to sit down. I’ll stuff some scrambled eggs, a few broken slices of bacon, and a piece of cheese in a flour tortilla. This gives them a proper breakfast, but they can eat it in the car.

3. Smoothies

Smoothies are great because you can pack in just about any healthy food you like and hide the flavor with fruit. Kale and spinach are great for you, but good luck getting your kids to willingly eat those. If you blend them in a smoothie with a bit of Greek yogurt, berries and orange juice, the taste is completely hidden and you’ve got a vitamin-packed breakfast. Store in a few to-go cups and you’re off.

4. Bagel with Cream Cheese and…

I like to add little twists to traditional foods so they’re a tad more memorable. A bagel with cream cheese is pretty normal, but when you add a slice of tomato and cucumber, you get something special with a bit more taste. Also, more nutrients is always good.

5. Stuffed Muffins

Muffins are easy to hold and eat while you’re walking or driving. My favorite thing about them is that you can make a few trays worth and keep them in the fridge for the week. If your family likes them hot, 30 seconds in the microwave will do. Mix ingredients like spinach, mushrooms, cheese, onions, and zucchini.

6. Hard-Baked Eggs

Yes, you read that correctly. Instead of boiling eggs (I never get the timing right), you can easily bake eggs in their shells for thirty minutes at 325-350 degrees. Put them in muffin trays so they don’t wiggle around or fall on one another. Once finished, rinse them in cold water to cool them down. (The brown spots on the shell are normal and harmless).

7. Egg Muffins

This is basically an egg sandwich without the bread. Scramble some eggs and pour into a greased muffin pan. Add chopped ham, onions, cheese and any other vegetable you like. Bake until the eggs are cooked well and they should pop out like muffins. Voila! Egg sandwich without any mess.

8. Homemade Cereal Bars

By microwaving your favorite cereal with marsh mellows, you’ll create a sticky, pliable concoction. Let the marsh mellows harden a bit, then mold the cereal into a rectangular bar for easy eating. Make seven on Sunday for the week and keep them in the fridge.

9. Hand-held Hash Browns

Crispy hash browns are a favorite of kids, but usually you have to eat them with a fork and plate, unless you buy the frozen patties, which I’m not a fan of. Spray your waffle maker with cooking spray and lay your shredded potatoes in a waffle-like pattern. After cooking, they’ll stick together like a patty for easy hand-holding.

For many kids, sharing doesn’t come easily; it’s not natural. Studies show that before two, children cannot even understand the concept. Here are a few ways you can teach your kids how to share.

1. Explain how to share.

You can’t expect your children to understand how to share unless you explain it to them. Sit him down and discuss sharing and why it is important. Be sure to explain that when he allows someone to use his toy that it is not gone forever, just temporarily. They will be more likely to give their toys away when they know they will come back.

2. Be generous.

You will be your child’s role model for a long time. He copies the things you do. If you share your possessions with others in front of your child, he will be more likely to do it as well. Make sharing a learning moment by expressing out loud what you plan to do: “Mommy is going to share the ball with Aunt Jenny now.” This will help lead your child.

3. Practice, practice, practice.

Your child will not understand sharing on the first attempt, and probably not on the tenth. If you are trying to teach it to a young child, it will take longer than a child who understands your words. Like I said, sharing is not our natural state, so it takes time and patience to learn. Expose your child to other children for practice.

4. Give to charity.

This only works when your child is old enough to understand, but you can cement the idea of sharing by regularly donating to charity. Make it a point every year to round up the items that you don’t need and donating them to those less fortunate. Collect old clothes and toys and bring them to a local shelter, church, or charity office.

5. Teach lessons.

When another child refuses to share with yours, use the opportunity to teach about sharing. Point out how bad it makes your child feel when someone will not let him play. Try to create empathy so he understands that every time he doesn’t share, he’s hurting someone else.

6. Offer praise.

When you notice your child sharing, be sure to let him know that you are proud. It’s important that you praise good behavior instead of merely punishing bad. Your child needs positive reinforcement to understand how you want him to behave.
