My “AHA!” Moment…. The change of a Mother/Daughter Relationship After Birth of Baby

My Mom and I have always been close. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had our fair share of arguments over the years, mostly when I was a teenager, but none the less, I grew up knowing I had a Mom who loved me unconditionally. But what I didn’t know, what I truly didn’t comprehend, was the depth of her love for me. That is, I didn’t fully understand the love of a mother until just recently.

I remember the excitement of finding out I was pregnant. After 2 long years of trying, including a devastating miscarriage (Ill come back to this at a later date); was it even possible that I could be pregnant??! I stood there just staring at the pregnancy stick, my heart pounding with happiness and disbelief!! Not quite a dark line, but not too faint either! Was the line even there? Was it just wishful thinking? Maybe I was hallucinating? Should I take another test? But it was there! That pink line-even if it was the faintest of faint, was there!! I’m gonna be a mom!!! I knew at that very moment that there would never be another baby loved more than mine.

Thinking back, I recall the first time I heard my baby’s heart beat, it suddenly became real! The thumping of his mirrored my own! It was loud and fast! I felt as if our heart beats were one! This is MY baby, I thought! I am FINALLY gonna be a mommy!

I couldn’t wait for my first ultrasound. Who would it look like? Would it be a boy or girl? Did I even want to know it’s sex? All I DID know, was that wanted to see my baby! And then, there HE was! My SON! I was in love!

As my belly grew bigger, so did my connection to him. I imagined how I would feel when I held him in my arms the very first time. But then, a sense of panic set in…I had to first push this baby out of me! And no thanks to my sister in law, who showed me a Youtube video of a live birth, I was mortified, to say the least!

Seriously though, nothing was more amazing then the day my baby was born! I held him in my arms and knew that I could never love anything more. The love was so deep it shook my inner core. I was totally consumed and overwhelmed by the emotions I felt for him.

And at that very second I felt this connection to my mother that I had never felt before. I finally got it! My “AHA” moment…I realized that my mother had that same love, the different love that only a  mother has for their offspring. As a child you love your parents, but as a parent the love of your child is indescribable, the most intense love one human can feel. I get it now mom, I completely understand.. On October 21, 2010, the day my son was born, my life forever changed in more ways than one.

Like most new moms, Lisa had been up night after night changing her newborn son’s diaper. She was so exhausted she could barely function, let alone match up the tiny snaps on her baby’s pajamas.

Frustrated by endless mis-snapping and re-snapping, Lisa found zippered pajamas, and thought her problems had been solved. That night when she unzipped her son’s pajamas, he started to cry from the shock of cold air. Although less time consuming, Lisa hated that she had to expose her baby’s entire body with the zipper. She felt her baby’s comfort should come first and yearned for the perfect footed pajama, which was both soft and cozy for her baby and hassle-free for mommy.

One night while feeding her son she thought of “Zippyz.” Zippyz are patented footed baby pajamas for easy and fast diaper changes with 3 snaps on the chest and a zipper from foot to belly. Finally, a solution suitable for baby AND mommy! Plus Zippyz are a unique baby shower gift! Along with her best friend and business partner Erica, Lisa decided make the diaper changing world a better place for all new parents!

Spending Your Mornings With Baby

bonding with babyBefore having children, I never thought mornings were very special. I didn’t dislike the mornings, but I never greeted the sun with a smile like they do in the movies. I would wake up and immediately begin to consider the things I had to do that day.

When I had a child, that all changed. Children are tremendously active in the mornings. I like to sit for a minute and gather my thoughts, maybe have a cup of tea and grab a shower before I am ready to start my day, but not my baby!

Your Baby’s Body is Ready for Action

Just like you and I, your baby gathers rest throughout the night. But unlike you and I, baby doesn’t have the skills to control that stockpile of energy. While we might conserve energy because we know it will be fourteen or sixteen hours before we rest again, your baby wants to play right now. His little body and mind will go-go-go until he can’t stay awake anymore, then he’ll do it all over again.

Your Baby Hasn’t Seen You in a While

After a long night in the crib, your child has probably woken up a few times just like you and I do. He will wake up, look around, and realize he’s in a safe place. If he has learned to self-soothe, he’ll fall back asleep until his body is well-rested.

What this means is that he is somewhat aware that time has passed. He knows you have been away from him for a long period of time and he’s anxious to see you. He misses you – not in an anxious way, but in the way we miss our loved ones when they can’t be around. You’ll probably notice that your little one is all smiles when you enter his room in the morning, bouncing back and forth or jumping in the crib.

Use This Time to Bond

This is the perfect time for some bonding because your baby is in the best mood. There’s no tiredness or crankiness to ruin playtime. Even a fall or head bump won’t ruin the mood at this time of day.

Use this time to get some powerful one-on-one bonding time with your child, even if it means you have to start your day a little earlier to fit it in. Play silly games, make funny noises, or stretch out on the floor with toys. Any time you get a chance to build a positive memory, you’re not just making your child feel loved: you’re compounding all sorts of developmental benefits that will stick with him for life.

Your child won’t mind; he’ll be up anyway!

The 4 Benefits of a Baby Massage

benefits of a baby massageYou do not need any special ointments or gels to give your baby a proper massage. All you need is a bit of one-on-one time with your baby. Gently rub your baby all over. Watch for his cues; if he is enjoying a certain motion, continue using it. If something irritates me, abstain from it. Try not to feed your baby just after a feeding or just before; hungry and empty bellies can be uncomfortable. Once you start giving your baby a regular massage, neither one of you will want to stop. Here are the four benefits of a baby massage.

1. Your baby will be soothed.

You have likely had moments when your baby is only calmed by being in your arms. As soon as you put him down, he fusses again. A full body massage is relaxing for your baby for the same reason you and I love them. Having our skin and muscles rubbed produces a calming effect. Your baby’s brain produces “love chemicals” like serotonin, oxytocin, and cortisol whenever he is touched, which make him feel better and calmer. Limit distractions in the room so your baby focuses on the massage.

2. Your baby will feel loved.

Babies need very simple gestures to know that people love them. Since they don’t understand words, all you need is to touch him often and make lots of eye contact. A massage is a perfect time to do both. Don’t make him compete for your attention. Turn off the TV and make it clear that he’s your focus for this time. Those brief moments can help you build a lasting relationship that will last for his whole life.

Helpful tip: A baby massage is an excellent way for fathers to bond with their children, too, who often spend less time with their children than moms.

3. Your baby will sleep better.

While we all have methods of falling asleep, a massage will work for anyone! Offer your baby a massage as part of his bedtime ritual. Give him a warm bath, read him quiet story that’s fun, but not exciting, and then offer a gentle massage. He may fall asleep before you’re finished! If you stick to this routine, he’ll start to get drowsy as soon as you start.

4. You’ll improve his emotional well-being.

By creating a regular pattern of safety and security, your baby will feel emotional connected to his parents. A bond will be established that will support the relationship for years to come. Make sure you don’t treat the massage like a chore. Use lots of smiles, kind expressions, and plenty of eye contact. Massages are also good for parents to help them feel more in control, which is something new parents often need.

5 Tips to Bond with Your Newborn

tips for bonding with newbornThe first few months of your baby’s life can set the tone for your entire relationship. By developing a loving, connected bond with your newborn, you can create the groundwork for a positive relationship. You want your little one to feel secure and less afraid of his new environment. Take every opportunity you can to bond so you can nurture that connection.

1. Use lots of touch.

After birth, your baby’s skin is very sensitive. Your little one just came from an environment where he was constantly in contact with your body. Touching you gives him a secure feeling. Hospitals everywhere encourage mothers to hold their newborns to their chests in the moments after birth to help calm the baby. Hold your newborn close often. If you’re relaxing on the sofa or bed, bring your baby with you, rather than alone in the bassinet.

2. Make your baby smile.

Any time you can draw a laugh, smile, or squeak out of your baby, you are building a positive memory in his mind of his parent. Create enough of these positive moments and he will begin to light up at your appearance. Reinforce this condition whenever you can. Use gentle tickling, silliness, and laughing of your own to have positive moments.

3. Bond during feeding.

Infants require a lot of feeding; initially every one to three hours. During these moments, look into your infant’s face while gently stimulating his skin. Conventional wisdom says newborns are more aware during their feedings, so this is a perfect time to develop that connection. Breastfeeding is an especially intense bonding experience; most mothers miss it once they stop.

4. Talk and sing whenever you can.

You might silly talking with someone who can’t respond, but communicating with your baby helps him understand that you are paying attention to him. Narrate your actions, behaviors, and feelings, even what you’re doing is mundane and routine. At first your conversation will be one-sided, but you’re helping your baby understand that communication with his parents is easy, harmless, and comforting.

5. Calm down.

Just like adults, babies intuitively understand the emotions of the people around them. They feel what you’re feeling. If you are tense, anxious, and frustrated, your behavior will pass that on to your child. On the same token, you relax, smile, sing a gentle song, and speak positively, your baby will share those feelings. Relationships are built on positive emotions, so stay peppy!
